Back in the saddle
This post originally appeared in my previous blog, but has been moved here because I think it makes a good introductory note.
With my previous post arriving June 30, 2004, it seems a daunting task to revive the jerseyfreeze blog. I think my problem almost a year ago was too narrow a focus. At the time, I thought a narrow focus was required in order to stay interested in the topic and truly delve into a particular idea. Maybe that mindset is still accurate, but I guess it’s possible that my choice was significantly more narrow than it should’ve been.
With that off my chest, I feel free to start fresh, with several focii. The world’s greatest ice cream stand is still near and dear to my heart, but I need to add a few topics that have recently piqued my interest.
Oddly enough, the event that precipitated this return to blogging was simply reading an essay entitled Writing, Briefly by Paul Graham. In it, Graham points out that writing not only expresses ideas, it creates new ones. That’s what I hope to accomplish with a blog. I want to get all the random, jumbled and seemingly chaotic ideas in my head out in front of an audience.
I want to hone my writing skills, find my voice, identify good and bad habits, learn to rewrite and practice presenting ideas in the simplest, most easily understood way.
Now, on to the the topics of this blog. The ice cream stand remains the cornerstone. From there, I’d like to branch out into the newly minted term “life hacks,” which denotes a set of ideas, tips and tricks for getting things done more easily and with greater chance of success. A life hack is a method to accomplish something that you believe requires an extraordinary amount of energy, but actually can be done quite simply with a little out-of-the-box thinking.
I’d also like to address the whole getting-things-done movement, which addresses a system for organizing your life. Getting things done requires processing all inputs (every new idea, though or project) and filing them in a holistic system where nothing falls through the cracks and everything is given proper attention.
